What is makeup?
Well, that is a difficult question to answer. One of the technical definition is “cosmetics such as lipstick or powder applied to the face, used to enhance or alter the appearance”. However, the word makeup is such a broad term. It does not mean the same thing to everyone. For me makeup is an outlet. It allows me to express feelings that I cannot express normally. It allows me to feel powerful, when I otherwise don’t. I can be anyone I want to be. To me makeup is an art. I mean I still haven’t mastered the art of the wing. Watching a makeup brush move is like watching an artist paint with a brush and just wait to see what masterpiece would be created. Each person has their own art vice, whether it’s painting, drawing, dancing, singing, etc. Makeup is mine.
What is beauty?
This may be even trickier to answer. There are many definitions of the word beauty. For instance, according to Merriam Webster, one definition is “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit”. There is also an old saying, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. However, they don’t actually tell you what it is. Society, shows us that beauty is a size 0 with perfect skin and perky breast. Even now, we see all the “beautiful people” on YouTube, starting to look the same. But, is that what beauty is? Or, just what one group of people think is beautiful. Does that mean my big ass is not beautiful? Or, that no one will find me beautiful? Honestly, who cares? I don’t. I think I am beautiful. I also think I could lose a few pounds (ok, maybe hundred lol), but it’s because I want to. Not because someone told me to. As long as you love yourself and believe in who you are, what others think don’t matter.
Does makeup define beauty?
These questions just keep getting harder and harder to answer. Unlike the other question, there is not a definition that can be written down to try and define what this question means. It truly depends on the person. Some people believe that they have to wear makeup to be beautiful. While, others wear it to enhance their beauty. Then you have the ones who only wear makeup to become someone else, rather it’s to become beautiful it’s up to them. If we look at it in a technical way, makeup is essentially just another tool to enhance what someone already has. Like getting your hair or nails done. But, if we look at the broader picture, makeup is an art (yes, I am repeating myself). When you think of art, rather, it’s music, paintings, dancing, etc., you can feel the passion the artist has when see their work. You know how long it took them to get just the right dance move or to hit that high note or to find the right shade of blue for the sky. It’s intuitive. We see the beauty in it. It is the same for makeup. Makeup is beauty and beauty is makeup.
